Contra (miscon) ception

08/03/2012

When Parker (the pen and ink – that’s not rhyming slang, by the way – company) marketed a fountain-pen in Mexico, its posters and press advertisements were supposed to follow the corporate house-style and convey the message, as they did in English, that “It won’t leak in your pocket and embarrass you.” As you all know, of course, in Latin America Spanish that would have been: “No te avergonzará chorreándose en tu bolsillo”.

However, the company was under the mistaken impression that the Spanish verb for “to embarrass” was “embarazar”. Therefore, the ads read instead: “No te embarazará chorreándose en tu bolsillo”.

Unfortunately, that means: “It won’t leak in your pocket and make you pregnant”.

Ka-boom tisssssh!
