There are many and varied ways to render the Greek χούμους into English. I’ve seen, for example, hummus, hoummus, hommus, hummos, humus and houmous. Now, we all know the cartoon reputation of the Ancient Greeks for the … er … unrestrained character of their physical affections. We also know that, when it comes to their physical dimensions, the average Greek tends to this day to be somewhat disadvantaged by comparison with (say) the average Netherlander. Nevertheless:
