Feral apostrophes

30/11/2012

Today’s contribution is brazenly stolen from the tweets of Stephen Mangan. His Wikipedia entry as “an English actor” does not do justice to his skill; apart from the repellent Guy Secretan in Green Wing, Dirk Gently and Episodes, he was also responsible for the best – and gloriously bonkers – dramatic portrayal of our egregious ex-Prime Minister (and global hypocrite) in the mad fantasy The Hunt for Tony Blair.

Anyway, last week he posted this photo (as “Apostrophe Crime”) which beautifully shows the illogic of feral apostrophes. Are CD and DVD now ‘words’ or abbreviations? Whichever way you cut it, it’s one or the other and not both.  You surely can’t in all logic hedge your bets by having both variants on one sign

apostrophe crimewithout being judged as borderline illiterate.
