Headline writing: it’s a kind of magic


The world of punning headlines provides endless amusement. Sub-editors labour diligently in the unregarded, uncredited gloom of newspapers, correcting and précis-ing the journalists’ garbled prose. The headlines are where their imagination is allowed free rein. On 8 February 2000, in the world of Scottish football, Celtic (one of the all-time great teams) were beaten 1-3, at home, by the unfancied Inverness Caledonian Thistle (emphatically not OOTA-TGT). The Sun, brilliantly, went all Mary Poppins and celebrated the underdogs’ victory with:
