Have you stopped beating your wife?

The role of newspaper advertising manager can hardly be the trickiest job in the world. The hardest part of it could be having to negotiate discounts with the advertisers, but that is frequently done over sybaritic lunches. Apart from that, somebody else does all the work. In due course the copy comes in, page-ready. Then you simply lob the task across to the page designer, who plonks the ad in tomorrow’s paper. Send the details down to Accounts, for them to issue the invoice. Job done. Coffee and sudoku.

Then there are the days when it all goes ever-so slightly wrong. Those are the times when the juxtaposition of advertising and editorial kinda bites you right where it hurts. I get the feeling that the management of ASDA would have been slightly less than ecstatic about the sensitive location of their 2009 DVD offer.
